Dear ELAC Family,
As we continue to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month we want to highlight other inspirational and prominent Latina/o figures. Some of who spent much of their lives in Los Angeles. Each of them has been role models and heroes for generations of people across the world and their profound impact on the Latino culture will continue forever.
An American labor leader and civil rights activist, Cesar Chavez along with Dolores Huerta co-founded the National Farm Workers Association the National Farm Workers Association. He dedicated his life’s work to la causa (the cause)—to gain better working and living conditions for thousands of farm workers. Chavez famously organized and led one of the most successful boycotts in U.S. history, in which over 17 million Americans participated in the Delano grape strike and boycott. This boycott led to an agreement guaranteeing field workers' right to unionize, better working conditions, and access to health care and pensions.
Most known for his stellar baseball career, Afro-Puerto Rican Roberto Clemente played with the Brooklyn Dodgers’ minor league before making his major league debut as a professional baseball right fielder who played 18 seasons for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He spent his time off the field involved in charity work, organizing with charities and providing funding to Latin American countries. Clemente was killed in a tragic plane crash while delivering supplies to Nicaragua after an earthquake.
Born in Los Angeles, CA in 1958, Dr. Ellen Ochoa is a Mexican-American engineer and former astronaut, known best for being the first Hispanic woman to go into space when she served on a nine-day STS-56 mission aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery in 1993. She has flown in space four times, logging nearly 1,000 hours in orbit. She also served as the 11th Director of the NASA Johnson Space Center, becoming the first Hispanic and second woman to do so.
Thank you for celebrating with us Hispanic Heritage Month.
