English as a Second Language (ESL) Assessment
Online Assistance:
- Online Video Meeting - Schedule an online appointment to receive assistance. Please log in using your Student Account (LACCD SSO). A confirmation email (with meeting link) will be sent to your student email. Appointments are hosted using ConexEd.
- Email - Send your questions by email to @email. For the best experience, please be sure to include your Full Name and Student ID#. Student emails are typically answered within one business day (excluding weekends and holidays).
- Live Chat (Instant Messaging) - Chat with a staff member in real time. Visit our Live Chat page for more information. To begin, click "Live Chat" on the ConexEd Card below (during available hours). Please log in using your Student Account (LACCD SSO).
Mission Statement
The East Los Angeles College Assessment Center strives to accurately identify students’ English, Reading and Math skill levels. Carefully selected assessment instruments and multiple measures are utilized to appropriately assess student skill levels and recommend course placement. Proper course placements enable students to successfully progress through required course sequences and to achieve their educational goals.
Important Information
In response to Assembly Bill (AB) 705, East Los Angeles College has moved away from standardized testing as the primary means of assessing students. Please note:
- As of January 2019, the English & Math assessment tests are no longer offered.
- As of January 2020, the English as a Second Language (ESL) assessment test is no longer offered.
New Assessments
English & Math Assessment
There is a new English & Math assessment process known as Multiple Measures. The process consists of using high school coursework, high school grades, and high school GPA to determine English and Math placement levels. Students who earned a U.S. high school diploma, passed the General Educational Development (GED) test, or earned a high school proficiency certificate within the past ten (10) years, are eligible to participate. English as a Second Language (ESL) Assessment
There is a new ESL assessment process known as ESL Guided Self-Placement. The process involves asking students to describe their English Language abilities to determine an ESL placement level. Students who plan to take Credit ESL classes (intermediate & advance levels) are invited to participate. Students who prefer Noncredit ESL classes (free classes for beginners) are not required to participate. Please visit our ESL Guided Self-Placement page to learn more!
