Learn More About Health Information Technology

Would you like to learn technical skills to help people in the health care field? The Health Information Technology program at ELAC prepares you for positions in health information or medical records departments at health care facilities such as hospitals, clinics, physician's offices, insurance companies, correctional facilities, government agencies and public and private outpatient surgery centers. You will learn to analyze, evaluate, abstract and compile health information as well as maintain patient privacy and confidentiality. As you prepare for one of our certificate programs as a Coding Specialist or Medical Biller, you may learn to work as part of a team or supervise staff members. Whatever career path you choose in the health care field, East Los Angeles College's HIT program is designed to give you the knowledge, confidence and experience to help you succeed.

Success = Great Teachers

HIT faculty members are credentialed by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). They have extensive experience in the field and are committed to student success. Teachers work with students on an individual basis insuring they understand all aspects of the curriculum. Directed Practice is faculty supervised during the final semester to provide hands-on practice in affiliated health care facilities.

Health Information Technology students have access to state-ofthe-art hardware, software, and sample medical records that simulate industry experience. During your final semester, Directed Practice courses provide valuable hands-on experience in leading health care facilities.

An ELAC Associate Degree and completion of lower division academic requirements prepares graduates to transfer to bachelor degree programs at universities in California

Graduates of the ELAC Health Information Technology (HIT) program are qualified to take the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) national exam to be credentialed as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Coding Associate (CCA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or Certified Coding Specialist-Physician (CCS-P). The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Eduction (CAHIIM) through the AHIMA. ACADEMIC COURSES ARE ALSO AVAILABLE

Success Costs Less @ ELAC

Tuition is low, less than $400 per semester for a full-time student who is a California resident. Plus, we make it easier for working students to attend classes by providing support services such as loans, financial aid, childcare, tutoring, scholarships, health care and more.

Admission is Easy

Anyone 18 years or older qualifies for admission to East Los Angeles College. People under 18 qualify if they graduated from high school or if they have passed the California High School Proficiency Test. High school students may concurrently enroll at ELAC with the consent of their parents and high school and get an early start on their college education and pay no tuition.
