Scholarships - ELAC Students represent for Scholarships

The English Department offers a variety of scholarships. Please read the descriptions of each scholarship below to see if you are eligible to apply for one or more scholarships.

Genice Everhart Memorial Scholarship

A memorial to Genice Everhart, a beloved English/ESL instructor who passed away suddenly, was established in 2011. The long-term commitment to this scholarship stems from the dedicated fundraising of English faculty, augmented by contributions of friends and family of Genice Everhart.

Criteria
- 3.2 GPA
- ELAC ESL student
- Must be eligible for financial aid

Los Angeles Chinese Woman’s Club Scholarship

The Los Angeles Chinese Woman's Club Scholarship was established through a donation through the English Department for students in the ESL program.

Criteria
- Must be an ELAC ESL student
- Must plan to continue taking ESL classes at ELAC
- Must be eligible for financial aid
- The scholarship is used specifically for books, supplies, and tuition.

Margie Mentel Memorial Scholarship

Ms. Mentel was a beloved English literature teacher who taught at ELAC in the 1990's. A memorial scholarship was established by her husband and is supported by current faculty and former students.

Criteria
- 3.2 GPA
- Completed 30 units and completed English 101; enrolled in English Department Literature course
- English major
- Transferring to four-year institution
- Essay should include your personal and education history and discussion of how this scholarship would benefit your career/educational goals
- Open to all ELAC students regardless of residency status

Opportunity to Succeed Scholarship

Faculty members of the English department have contributed funds to honor an outstanding student who has excelled in developmental English courses. This scholarship is open to all students regardless of their legal residency status.

Criteria
- 3.0 GPA
- Completion of at least one of the following courses within the last year with an A or B (or received a passing grade if the course was graded on a credit/no credit basis): English 19, English 21, English 28
- Essay describing educational and career goals along with any challenges overcome to pursue a higher education

Outstanding Achievement in English Scholarship

Faculty members of the English department have contributed funds to honor an outstanding student who has excelled in transfer-level English courses. This scholarship is open to all students regardless of their legal residency status.

Criteria
- 3.0 GPA
- Completion of at least one of the following courses within the last year with an A or B: English 101, English 102, English 103
- Essay describing educational and career goals along with any challenges overcome to pursue a higher education

- 3.0 GPA
- Completion of at least one of the following courses within the last year with an A or B (or received a passing grade if the course was graded on a credit/no credit basis): ESL 3A, ESL 4A, ESL 5A, ESL 6A, ESL 8
- Essay describing educational and career goals along with any challenges overcome to pursue a higher education

Faculty members of the English department have contributed funds to honor an outstanding student who has excelled in Reading courses. This scholarship is open to all students regardless of their legal residency status.

Criteria
- 3.0 GPA
- Completion of at least one of the following courses within the last year with an A or B (or received a passing grade if the course was graded on a credit/no credit basis): Reading 19, Reading 25, Reading 29, Reading 101
- Essay describing educational and career goals along with any challenges overcome to pursue a higher education

UniversityTutor.com conducts a scholarship essay contest by posting a monthly essay prompt (the “Contest”) located at UniversityTutor.com. To enter, eligible participants must log on to the Website and submit an essay by 11:59 P.M. Eastern Standard Time (“EST”) by the last day of the applicable Contest Period and in accordance with the essay guidelines set forth in Section 3 of the UniversityTutor.com scholarship description.
