How to challenge a prerequisite:

STUDENTS WHO HAVE TAKEN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE AT A HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL ONLY   (This is for students who have completed high school courses in the U.S., but do not have any college credit for those classes):

If you believe your language skills are beyond level 1 or a beginning level in any one of the languages we offer you must fill out the Prerequisite/Corequisite Challenge Petition form.  You may be able to enroll in higher levels of a language after completing the challenge process. You must fill out a Prerequisite/Corequisite Challenge Petition form. The form may be obtained at Admissions or downloaded from the ELAC website. Go directly to:

http://www.elac.edu/prospectivestudents/admissions/forms.htm

Print the Prerequisite/Corequisite Challenge Petition form as a PDF file or a Word document. Make sure to fill out the top part of the form, including the class you would like to enroll in, sign at the bottom, and turn in to the Modern Languages Department in C2-109. At this time you will be evaluated by professors in the department. This form must be turned into the department as soon as possible.

STUDENTS WHO HAVE TAKEN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE AT ANOTHER COMMUNITY COLLEGE OR ANY OTHER INSTITUTION OF HIGHER LEARNING:

You must fill out a Course Prerequisite Petition only if you completed the language course(s) in another community college or any other institution of higher learning.  Make sure to take your transcripts to Admissions and fill out a Course Prerequisite Petition form. This is NOT the same as the Prerequisite Challenge Petition. This process is completed in its entirety at the Admissions office; you do not need to go to the Modern Languages Department.

The form may be obtained at Admissions or downloaded from the ELAC website. Go directly to:

http://www.elac.edu/prospectivestudents/admissions/forms.htm

Print the Course Prerequisite Petition form as a PDF file or a Word document. AP EXAMS:  If you have taken the College Board's AP Exam in a foreign language and scored a 3, 4, or 5, you are eligible to start at a more advanced level.  Please see one of the foreign language professors for more information.

Please contact the Modern Languages Department in C2-109 or call 323-780-6798 if you have any questions or concerns about the process.  Thank you.
