East Los Angeles College

Welcome to our Spanish program!

Spanish is the third most spoken language in the world, spoken by over 400 million people. It is the official language of 21 countries, and is spoken in many others. The list is long: Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Equatorial Guinea, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Morocco, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Spain, Uruguay, USA, Venezuela.

There is a high need in Southern California for a bilingual workforce with strong Spanish skills. Our heritage-speaker track --- courses like Spanish 35, 36, and 37 ---- is designed especially for Spanish speakers, and targets areas of communication that are the most challenging for U.S. Spanish-speaking Latinos. If there is ever a time for our Spanish-speaking communities to start thinking about becoming more fully bilingual, now is the time!

We offer a broad spectrum of courses, ranging from Spanish Language instruction to studies of Civilization and Culture, Literature, and Spanish for Medical Personnel. Future vocational Spanish courses will include: Spanish for Law Enforcement, Spanish for Educators, and Spanish for Hospitality. We have a dual language track: Traditional for non-Spanish speakers (Spanish 01, 02, 03...), and the aforementioned Heritage track for Spanish-speakers who grew up in a Spanish-speaking environment but who have never studied it (Spanish 35, 36, 37, 27...). We want students to be successful in learning and improving the language. Click on “How do I select a Spanish Course?” on the right-hand side of this screen to guide you in your initial placement or click on “Course Sequence” to learn which class to take next.

We will soon offer an AA-T degree in Spanish which qualifies students to transfer with a declared major to the CSU. Students also have the opportunity to earn up to eight credits by taking summer classes in Salamanca, Spain, a UNESCO world heritage site. Click on the “Study Abroad” link on the department's main web page on the left-hand side to learn more. Feel free to come to our department or contact us by email should you have any questions.
