Proficiency Statement 7:

Students demonstrate awareness of goals and purposes of courses and programs in which they are enrolled.

CLOs are required to be reported on the course syllabus (7.1, 7.2, 7.3, 7.4, 7.5, 7.6, 7.7). They are also added as addendum to the Course Outline of Record (COR) for each course and can be viewed on Electronic Curriculum Database (ECD) (7.8, 7.9, 7.10). Students can learn about the SLO process at the "Student Learning Outcomes, What Students Need to Know" site (7.11) and also access their course outcomes through the "Find Your Course Learning Outcomes" site (7.12).

The District Student Survey reveals that 91% of students agreed that SLOs are presented or listed on course syllabi (1.1). This data was supplemented by the LA Team's outreach to students, regularly setting up a booth on the main pathway and informally surveying students about their knowledge of CLOs.

Faculty receive a "Talking Points" handout at the beginning of the semester to help them address CLOs in their classes (7.13).

Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs), General Education Outcomes (GEOs), and Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILOs) are listed in the college catalog which is available online for all students (7.14). Programs have recognized the need for indirect assessment of students' awareness of program outcomes. For example, Computer Applications and Office Technology assessed their PLOs through a focus-groups conducted by the Learning Assessment Office and the Office of Institutional Effectiveness. The focus group demonstrated student awareness of the PLOs and identified areas the department could work on to improve student performance, such as increased lab space and time (7.15).

Several other departments worked with the LAO to develop student surveys to begin assessment of PLOs as well as to determine if students truly understand the purpose of the programs in which they are enrolled. These indirect assessments took place in Fall 2012 (7.16, 7.17, 7.18).
