ELAC Initiatives for Going Green

East Los Angeles College is committed to going GREEN, by integrating sustainable practices and principles across the College. Being a part of Los Angeles Community College District, ELAC has taken initiatives to become an energy efficient and environmentally friendly college. ELAC strongly believes that as a college, we must achieve a carbon-neutral school to help the battle against global warming. To accomplish this, we must start by implementing sustainable design strategies, generating on-site renewable power, and purchasing renewable energy and achieving complete ecological balance.

As mentioned on the LACCD Go Green website, ELAC has accomplished the same sustainability through the following:

  1. A commitment to Greenbuildings.  New buildingsare being built to LEED certification requirements and existing buildings are being retrofitted for maximum efficiency.
  2. A district-wide recycling program is being implemented.  Look for the blue bins on your campus.
  3. A district-wide sustainability committee is working to develop green curriculum.

To further the District's "green building" mission, energy-producing photovoltaic "solar energy" cells have been incorporated, and all new buildings will be LEED verified, which means they are being built to standards set by the U.S. Green Building Council. The ELAC Information Technology Department has also taken a part of "Going Green", by utilizing a Power Management software for all PC networks. Surveyor will be implemented to allow the college to manage, measure, and reduce energy consumption on PC Networks. Another example is the GoPrint system, which eliminated wasteful printing and has reduced the printing cost for students by half for all open labs.
