Learn More About English:

Succeed@ELAC
Speaking and writing good English are the hallmarks of an educated person. English, whether in traditional essay format or in reports, is used in every field. Researchers, scientists, and even mathematicians need to express their ideas and results in written form. American society and economic vitality is a result of educating people with many different backgrounds communicating using a common language. To understand ourselves and the world around us, reading and interpreting college level books is essential. Mastering spoken and written English is the key to a career, success in college, and essential to transferring to a university. Students who do not qualify for college level English courses have many options to improve their reading, vocabulary, grammar and writing skills. Reading 20, 21, 57, and 60 are designed to prepare English-speaking students for English 101. Students who speak English as second language should take the ESL assessment to see if they place in levels 3,4,5, or 6. Students are advised to take ESL Reading and ESL Conversations classes to better prepare for college courses in English and other disciplines.

ELAC Faculty and Students
Success = Great Teachers

English faculty members have a wide range of abilities. Authors who have written books, poems and articles teach creative writing. Specialists teach English as a Second Language (ESL) using the latest techniques and technologies. Other professors are experts in teaching reading, literature and humanities. The Writing Center and free one-on-one tutoring help students with class assignments. Free laboratories, access to computers, lectures and other enrichment activities enhance and assist students to succeed.

ELAC Students at English Computer Lab
Success = High Tech Classrooms

Classes are equipped with technology that allows instructors to use power-point presentations, videos, film clips and other computer assisted learning aids to make English come alive. A comprehensive college library provides a wealth of research material-including books, data bases, periodicals and internet connectivity.

Success = University Transfer

Successful completion of English 101 (College Reading and Composition I) is required to transfer to a university. Other English courses satisfy lower division requirements in Critical Thinking, Humanities and English Communication. Students may also elect to major in English.

ELAC Faculty and Students
Success = Career Connections

People who are able to read and write will be successful job applicants and communication is the key to upward mobility. Good English skills are essential for careers in teaching, social work, law, journalism, management, research, science, engineering and mathematics.

ELAC Students
Success Costs Less @ ELAC

Tuition is low, less than $400 per semester for a full time student who is a California resident. In addition, we make it easier for working students to attend classes by providing support services such as loans, childcare, tutoring, scholarships, health care and more.
