Ethnic Newswatch Tutorial
What is Ethnic Newswatch?
Ethnic NewsWatch is an interdisciplinary, bilingual (English and Spanish) and comprehensive full text database of the newspapers, magazines and journals of the ethnic, minority and native press. Designed to provide the "other side of the story," ENW titles offer additional viewpoints from those proffered by the mainstream press. Coverage begins in 1990.
Starting Point
This is the main page, where you will begin your search.
This looks a lot like ProQuest and the interface is very similar. The Search method is also the same and so for further instructions, please go to the Proquest Tutorial
There are a few differences that we will highlight here. For example, take a look at the Database field: It says Ethnic NewsWatch. That is not included in the regular ProQuest. There is also an "Ethnic Group" field as well. Again, something not included in the regular ProQuest. You can also limit results to "Biographical (Personal Profiles)."
Ethnic Groups
Ethnic NewsWatch allows you to limit your results by a publication representing the ethnic groups that are listed in the drop down menu. The groups are listed alphabetically. You might want to use this find articles from a particular ethnic perspective.
Biographical (Personal Profiles)
Biographical (personal profiles) - The Biographical Profiles check box lets you limit your search to articles that contain biographical information. When this box is checked, the string AND SUB(personal profiles) is added to your search as a limiter .
Searching
Here we have searched for articles on "Honor Killings." Ethnic Newswatch found 59 articles, and displays 10 at a time. You have several choices:
––Try a different search
––Jump to articles or narrow your results further
––Limit results to articles from scholarly journals, magazines
or newspapers, and
––Sort results by:
(1) Most relevant
articles first;
(2) Most recent articles
first;
(3) Oldest (historical) articles
first.
If you see a title that interests you, you can read the entire article by clicking on "Full text." Or, you can read a short summary of each article by clicking on "Abstract." To be able to retrieve it later, click in the box labeled "Mark this article."
The Articles
Here we see a screenshot of the article. We will now dissect and explain each section.

Part 1: Here are some choices you have as to what to do with an article.
Part 2: Clicking on "Show Options for finding similar articles" brings you...
... to this screen. Ethnic NewsWatch highlights for you the different features that are written about each article, including locations, people and subjects. This allows you to search for articles on similar subjects, locations, people, article types and so on. Simply click on the choices you like and then click search.
Citations
Each article gives you all the information to create your citations, whichever citation style you choose. The titles of both the article and publication, place of publication and the like are all listed for you.
