Looking for Clues

Here are some clues to help you distinguish between popular and scholarly periodicals. No single clue below will apply every time, but taken as a whole, they provide good guidelines.

Popular Magazines
  • many photographs and advertisements
  • printed on glossy paper
  • issued at least once a month
  • articles no more than a few pages long
  • covering a wide range of topics
  • geared toward the general public
  • Scholarly Journals
  • "Journal" in the title
  • published on a quarterly or monthly basis
  • bibliographies at the end of articles
  • written for researchers or professionals
  • more text than photos or advertisements
  • sponsored by a professional or academic
      organization
