Two Types of Article Databases

1. General Article Databases

  •  Is your topic general or cross-disciplinary?
  •  Currently in the news?

If so, start with one of the general article databases. These cover a wide range of subjects and often index a mixture of popular and scholarly sources. This is often a good place to begin research. Here are some examples of general databases and the kinds of articles they identify:

ProQuest logo
ProQuest indexes over 4,000 journals and magazines covering all fields and topics, academic and popular. Some go as far back as 1975. It provides full text for many of these articles.

Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center logo
Opposing Viewpoints provides full-text access to periodicals, journals, magazines and pamphlets drawn mainly from Thomson Gale publishing houses. It includes point of view articles, overviews of topics, statistics, links to web sites, and full-text magazines and newspaper articles.

CQ Researcher logo
CQ Researcher contains original research articles and reports written by journalists. Coverage includes a broad range of current events and controversial topics.
