Using Phrases

What are phrases? How can you use them to refine your search?

You can try each of the searches below using the Google search engine and compare your results with ours. [We performed the searches on Sept. 20, 2006].

1. Click on Google and search:
trail of tears

  • About 9,850,000 results
  • Not all web results contained the phrase "Trail of Tears." Some just contained the words "trail" and "tears" separately on the page.

2. Click on Google and search:
"trail of tears"
  • About 1,490,000 results.
  • Each result contained the phrase "trail of tears"... but did each result contain information on the "Trail of Tears" you were looking for (the 1838 Cherokee forced relocation) or something else (e.g., rock band, motorcycle lines, etc.)?

3. Click on Google and search:
"trail of tears" "andrew jackson"

  • About 95,800 results.
  • Each result contains text on "Andrew Jackson" and "Trail of Tears." Most results are about historical accounts of the trail of tears and President Andrew Jackson.
  • But what if you want to find more reliable information from organizations that offer research on the Trail of Tears?

4. Click on Google's Advanced Search. Use the same search as above; it should already be entered in the boxes. Limit your search to the Domain ending:   .org

  • About 16,000 results.
  • The results are taken only from the web sites of organizations that offer information on the Trail of Tears and Andrew Jackson.
