"Don't panic." ~ Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
To a novice just starting down the path of creating learning outcomes and assessments, SLOs can seem quite daunting. Don't panic. You are in good company if your initial reaction to SLOs is to dive for cover and try to avoid the process altogether. Unfortunately, avoidance is not an option when it comes to student success. However, once you complete the "Crash Course in SLOs," we believe you will better understand just how important and informative the outcome and assessment process is for both you and your students.
As college faculty and staff, we share a common goal - student success - regardless of the individual student's academic or life goals. The SLO process is designed to help you and your colleagues provide students with the tools they need to achieve their dreams in a reliable, valid, and transparent way. The reward for all of us is the satisfaction of knowing that our students are prepared for the challenges of the 21st century.
