East Los Angeles College MESA uses a comprehensive approach to learning, providing a variety of academic support and enrichment opportunities facilitating student success in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). ELAC sits in the diverse city of Monterey Park whose residents have a highly varied ethnicity (65% Hispanic), age, primary language spoken at home, enrollment status, and social and economic background. This Hispanic population is the fastest growing group in California, yet one of the most underrepresented in higher education, particularly in STEM, with low transfer and graduation rates. Our students require considerably more time, flexibility and academic support than students enrolled in non-quantitative or non-scientific curricula. To address these needs, MESA aims to provide a strong, effective academic program based on individual needs, enabling students to pursue their educational goals and progress toward their lifelong academic and professional objectives. The aforementioned issues and goals of MESA drive the need for MESA, which will continue providing the foundation for low-income and first generation college students to succeed in STEM.
