LAW ENFORCEMENT PROFESSIONALS TO
SIMULATE ACTIVE “SHOOTER” CAMPUS SITUATION
East Los Angeles College’s Administration of Justice Department
to conduct training session for public safety agencies
MONTEREY PARK – The Administration of Justice Department at East Los Angeles College has organized a multi-jurisdictional training day simulating a unified response to a critical on-campus incident. The training scenario is an active “shooter” on a college campus with multiple casualties possibly barricaded with hostages. Pre-exercise strategy sessions will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on June 4 and a live training day will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on June 5.
Law enforcement professionals from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Monterey Park Police Department and Alhambra and Monterey Park fire departments, plus local ambulance companies and emergency medical treatment providers will participate.
The intent of the training is to improve the college’s existing plans, infrastructure and collaborative response capability to deal with a crisis in coordination with surrounding public safety agencies. The training day is the culmination of 18 months of work on an emergency preparedness grant from the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security. At the time the $50,000 grant was awarded, ELAC was the only educational institution selected for funding. This grant will provide a “best practices” model for critical incidence response at an educational institution.
The training exercise will take place in decades-old buildings scheduled to be demolished to make way for new construction. Once cleared, the area will be the site of a fine arts complex funded by monies from Proposition A/AA.
“ELAC was the natural college to host the training,” said Patrick Hauser, chairman of the Administration of Justice program at the college. “We have the premier Administration of Justice program in the area and disposable buildings that can be used to simulate a situation that would call for use of force.”
ELAC’s award-winning Administration of Justice program includes training for public safety careers, including criminal justice, fire technology, emergency medical technician and crime scene investigation. The program has
