East Los Angeles College Music Student To Play In State Piano CompetitionPosted: Mar/1/2019
Monterey Park, CA - Applied Music Major and pianist Shan Jiang is seeking to become the third East Los Angeles College (ELAC) student to win the California Professional Music Teachers Association (CAPMT) Honors Competition. Shan recently won first prize for the 19 - 26 age group at the CAPMT District 9 Honors Auditions Competition. She is now entered into the state competition on April 6, 2019 at the California School of the Arts – San Gabriel Valley where she will be competing against the 8 other CAPMT District winners.
Ms. Jiang grew up around music and has played the piano for many years.
“I have been playing piano for 20 years, my grandmother and my aunt are both piano teacher in China and I enjoy the piano and like to play beautiful pieces. I participated in many competitions and I was lucky enough to win a couple first prizes,” said Shan.
Shan enrolled at ELAC two years ago and the music professors on campus noticed her talent right away.
“When I first came to ELAC I studied Music Theory and then I met Dr. Lucy and I was so lucky because she helped me improve as a pianist. She is so nice and professional. She always supports me and gives me encouragement,” said Shan.
Dr. Lucy Nargizyan, a music professor at ELAC believed in Shan from the moment she heard her play.
“When I first heard her play I saw huge potential in her. My goal was to bring Shan to a completely new artistic level. I wanted her to have not just great technique but also high artistry where she can stand out," said Dr. Lucy.
“Shan told me she was just going to stick to studying music education and I told her with her talent she should pursue a degree in performance. Having a degree in performance can give her more options for her career,” said Dr. Lucy.
Dr. Lucy kept encouraging Shan to work hard and perform any chance she could to prepare for the CAPMT competition.
“I really pushed her hard and she bloomed and turned into an amazing performer,” said Dr. Lucy.
Shan has goals to become a college music professor and she currently is a piano instructor to over 20 ELAC students and community members. She also wants to continue to perform to help improve her musical talent.
Shan will be performing in a student recital to kick off the ELAC Festival of the Arts March 20 at 12:00p.m. in the Recital Hall. More information about the festival is available online: http://artsfestival.elac.edu
