SOUTH GATE, CA – On Friday October 16th, Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis joined representatives from East Los Angeles College (ELAC) and Alma Family Services to distribute free Amazon tablets and backpacks to students from low-income households who are learning remotely due to COVID-19.
Thanks to a donation from Amazon, 85 students from Southeast Los Angeles communities of the First District received a Fire 7 tablet to enhance their online educational experience. In addition, Alma Family Services helped to sponsor complimentary backpacks with school supplies that were distributed along with the tablets.
ELAC Interim President Dr. Alberto J. Román, along with other ELAC administrators and staff helped to distribute the tablets to students as they drove up to the South Gate Campus. These students were struggling with access to technology during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the tablets will help them to continue their vital education at ELAC. To date ELAC has distributed 1,213 laptops to students and will continue to help students in need of technology to learn remotely.
The ELAC Associated Student Union also assisted their fellow students. On Saturday, October 17th, 43 students were given an ELAC branded goodie bag filled with water bottles, masks, school supplies, and more. The ELAC ASU will distribute 93 more bags to students on Friday, October 23rd. Students can contact the Associated Student Union for information on assistance. The East Los Angeles College (ELAC) South Gate Campus is an extension of East Los Angeles College located in Monterey Park and has been at the same location for over 22 years. A new LEED Certified 105,000 square foot state-of-the-art institution that will include a library, lecture hall, classrooms and laboratories for the career technology education, liberal arts and science programs is projected to start construction sometime in 2021.
Laptops are available for ELAC students through their student portal. Students can apply for a laptop under the scholarship section of the portal. All communication regarding laptop distribution will be given to each student in their portal so it is vital for students to check it often: https://bit.ly/3dKrNQr
