California Governor Announces Appointment of ELAC Professor

SACRAMENTO, CA – California Governor Gavin Newsom announces the appointment of ELAC Professor Beatriz E. Tapia to the Commission on Judicial Performance (CJP). The Commission on Judicial Performance, established in 1960, is the independent state agency responsible for investigating complaints of judicial misconduct and judicial incapacity and for disciplining judicial officers.
Ms. Tapia has been the Chicana/o Studies Department Chair at East Los Angeles College since 2019 and a Professor of Chicana/o Studies since 2007. She was Adjunct Faculty for the Women’s Studies Program at Santiago Canyon College in 2007. Tapia held several positions at California State University, Fullerton from 2005 to 2007, including Adjunct Professor for the Women and Gender Studies Department, Chicana and Chicano Studies Department and Sociology Department. Tapia earned a Master of Arts degree in Ethnic Studies from the University of California, Berkeley. She is a member of the National Association of Chicana and Chicano Studies.
The CJP position does not require Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Ms. Tapia will be helping the commission’s mandate to protect the public, enforce rigorous standards of judicial conduct and maintain public confidence in the integrity and independence of the judicial system. She began her new role as an appointed public member on April 29, 2021, and her term ends on February 28, 2023.

The charge of the commission is to ensure fairness and integrity in the state’s judiciary and I look forward to representing the interests of our diverse citizenry as a public member of this commission,” said Tapia.
