ELAC Night at Latino Theater Co.

LOS ANGELES, CA – On Saturday, June 25th , President Roman joined ELAC faculty, staff, students and community members at the Los Angeles Theater Center for a historic evening of theater and ELAC outreach. The LTC (Latino Theater Company) presented the play, SLEEP WITH ANGELS written by playwright and ELAC alum, Evelina Fernandez and directed by LTC's Artistic Director Jose Luis Valenzuela.
ELAC Theater Professor Cristina Frías, ELAC Director of Professional Development Nancy Rodriguez, ELAC Professor Nora Zepeda, ELAC Professor Emeritus and member of the 50th Chicano Moratorium Committee, Maria Elena Yepes partnered with LTC to organize the event and celebrate live theater.
"What a great opportunity for ELAC to partner with the Latino Theater Co. to make this night a reality. To have ELAC students, faculty and staff be able to see a remarkable play written by an ELAC alum is truly special and shows that theater is a fabric of our community here on campus," said ELAC President Alberto J. Román.
The LATC lobby was dedicated to ELAC with projections and promotional materials displayed during a pre-show reception. Dr. Roman welcomed audience members from the stage and Professor Frías joined the artistic team for a post-show conversation and discussion on the ELAC Theater Department. Over the years, LTC has proudly hired ELAC students and faculty both as staff and artists on their various productions. On Saturday night, several ELAC students were in attendance and working the event from the box office and inside the theater.
“ELAC’s relationship to Latino Theater Company has been a successful pathway for many of our theater students to gain artistic experience and employment opportunities. This event demonstrates ELAC’s commitment to creating partnerships that support our outreach efforts and also, celebrates that art is an essential tool to community building,” said ELAC Theater Professor, Cristina Frías, who is teaching the first ever Chicano Theater course at ELAC.
The Latino Theater Co. and Chicano Moratorium Committee are dedicated to future partnerships and collaborations. They are committed to preserving oral history and amplifying the transformative power of the arts and the ELAC campus!
