Museum Internships for College Students 

The ELAC Art Department has compiled this list of museum internships for currently enrolled college students as a reference. Please follow the links for more information and pay attention to the various deadlines and eligibility requirements. 

Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship Program ⬈

Full-time, paid summer work opportunities at museums and visual arts organizations for college undergraduates from cultural backgrounds that have traditionally been underrepresented in the arts.

Internships are available at the Getty Center and Getty Villa, plus 60+ other institutions in Los Angeles County.

Internships at the Getty Center and Getty Villa ⬈

Internships will be offered in a variety of areas at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, California) and Getty Villa (Malibu, California) including communications, conservation, museum education, public programming, and more.

June – August, 10 week, full-time, paid stipend ($6,000)

Information available online in December for the following summer.

Internships at the Vincent Price Art Museum (VPAM) ⬈ 

There are two positions available each summer at VPAM, funded by the Getty MUI Program Information is available online in early April for the following summer.

1. Curatorial and Collections Internship at VPAM

June – August, 10 week, full-time, paid stipend ($6,000)

The Curatorial and Collections intern will learn about best practices in the museum field by providing support to VPAM staff in coordinating aspects of artist projects, exhibition production and installation, loan paperwork, collections management, and institutional partnerships. Interns will also manage the annual student art exhibition and gain administrative and marketing experience.

2. Education and Public Programming Internship at VPAM

June – August, 10 week, full-time, paid stipend ($6,000)

The Education and Public Programming intern will support the museum’s educational and public programming by working with program staff to plan and implement educational and community programs related to museum exhibitions.

Smithsonian Undergraduate Internship Program ⬈

Five-week internship program for ELAC students including an independent study course over winter intersession, a one- week museum studies workshop at VPAM, and a four-week museum studies internship with the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C. Organized by the Vincent Price Art Museum in collaboration with ELAC, the Smithsonian Office of Fellowships and Internships, and the Smithsonian Latino Center.

Expenses paid including travel stipend and housing accommodations

Los Angeles County Arts Commission Internship Program ⬈

Full-time, paid summer work opportunities at performing, film, media, literary, and municipal arts organizations for college undergraduates from cultural backgrounds that have traditionally been underrepresented in the arts.

Dates variable, full-time, paid stipend ($6,000)

Information available online at the end of March for the upcoming summer.

Smithsonian Internships ⬈

Various opportunities that place interns throughout the Smithsonian’s museums, research centers, and other units.

Deadlines occur on a rolling basis, follow the link to check individual postings for more information.

Most opportunities provide a stipend.

Andrew W. Mellon Summer Academy and Undergraduate Curatorial Fellowship Program ⬈

Provides specialized training in the curatorial field to students from historically underrepresented groups in the curatorial fields. The program is organized around two components, the Mellon Summer Academy and the Mellon Undergraduate Curatorial Fellowship. Students must first apply to a Summer Academy.

Andrew W. Mellon Summer Academy:

One-week program including workshops, tours, field trips, and networking events with museum professionals.

Mid-June, stipend and housing arrangements provided.

Application deadline March 1st

Andrew W. Mellon Undergraduate Curatorial Fellowship Program:

Two students from the summer academy are selected to participate in this 2-year fellowship program. Fellows work with a mentor and local program coordinator during the academic year, and complete a full-time 10-week summer fellowship during the summer.

2-year Fellowship, stipend ($4,000 for the academic year plus $6,000 for the summer)

Fulbright UK Summer Institute ⬈

Three or four week programs for US undergraduate students to study abroad at universities across the UK.
