Coming out and living openly aren’t something you do once, or even for one year. It’s a journey that we make every single day of our lives. Every coming out experience is unique and must be navigated in the way most comfortable for the individual. Whether it is for the first time ever or the first time today, coming out can be an arduous journey.
It is also a brave decision to live openly and authentically.

Resources
Creating a safe and inclusive space is extremely important, one way to make LGBTQ+ members feel included is by using pronouns. An individual's pronouns are based on what is most comfortable and affirming for them. According to The Trevor Project's 2020 National Survey, 1 in 4 youth (ages 13-24) go by pronouns other than he/him or she/her. For transgender and nonbinary youth, being referred to by the correct name and pronouns is a simple gesture of support. In honor of Coming Out Day, BestColleges.com created a pronouns guide. Our guide covers why it is important to use personal pronouns, using gender pronouns for equity and inclusion, and educational resources.
Our team at BestColleges.com partnered with CampusPride.org to share resources that will benefit students who identify as LGBTQ+. Our Pride Month Series deep dives into the best colleges for LGBTQ+ students, scholarships, COVID-19 resources and safety tips. Take a look below:
